Earlier this year, several animal mummies belonging to the extensive ancient Egyptian collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities, RMO) were investigated with a Canon Medical CT scanner in an intricate collaboration between the RMO, Leiden University and Canon Medical. Experts in computer science, biology, medica physics and medical imaging carried out the exploration.
3D modelling using state-of-the-art imaging equipment
The 3D-digitization and interactive visualization of the Canon Medical Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition used, in combination with AiCE Advanced intelligent Clear-IQ Engine, deep learning reconstruction technology developed by Canon Medical Systems, allowed digital autopsies of the mummies to be performed without any damage to the artefacts. Highly detailed 3D-models of the mummies could be made from the high resolution images obtained by using Vitrea software from Vital.
