Canon Medical’s mobile ultrasound scanner, that has been trialled by Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s medical team for several months, enhances the squad’s reputation for embracing the latest technological developments. The unit is around the size of a tablet computer and can be used to give an immediate diagnosis on muscle injuries, detecting tears and the presence of fluid. The ability to be able to immediately detect the nature of an injury and determine and method of treatment in a swift manner, without the potential need for a hospital visit, can vastly improve a rider’s chance of making a quick and successful recovery.

Team Doctor Toon Cruyt has been leading the medical staff’s use of the unit and said: “Having the Canon mobile ultrasound scanner has significantly evolved the way that we look after our riders. The nature of the sport is fast moving and geographically challenging, making hospital visits difficult. Being able to use the scanner in a quick and efficient manner wherever we are to give an instant diagnosis of a muscle injury can make a huge difference to a rider’s recovery. Tromp Medical Oy, the official representative of Canon Medical Systems in Finland, has been chosen to provide equipment for the RAPTOR suite and trauma room for the new Bridge Hospital, Helsinki University Hospital (HUS), which is currently under construction. HUS will be the first hospital in Europe to equip a RAPTOR* suite for trauma use.

* RAPTOR is the abbreviation for Resuscitation with Angiography, Percutaneous Techniques and Operative Repair.

“The patient is brought to the RAPTOR suite directly from the ambulance. Initial emergency examinations and care, FAST ultrasound examination to locate bleeding, computer tomography imaging, intravenous interventional radiological operations to stop life-threatening bleeding and, if needed, open surgeries will be conducted in the suite,” said Tuomas Brinck, a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology who has been coordinating the operational planning. The suite will be equipped with the Canon Alphenix 4D CT angiography and slide-rail operated computer tomography system integrated into the same patient table and user interface. The RAPTOR suite will be located between the emergency unit and the surgical department, in close proximity to the intensive care unit in the new Bridge Hospital, which is currently under construction.

The assembly will include training equipment.

Patients with life-threatening bleeding will be taken to the RAPTOR suite. The patients will be taken care of by a multi-disciplinary group, which will consist of experts in traumatology, vascular surgery, anaesthesiology and radiology, in addition to 3 to 4 first aid professionals in the initial phase. Model facility equipment will be installed in the Meilahti hospital area in the beginning of 2020 and it will be used to familiarise the staff and provide simulation training in order to have well-functioning treatment methods in place before operations begin at Bridge Hospital.

“As the RAPTOR suite and operation model will be a first in Europe, thorough staff familiarisation with the new operational environment and process is key,” Brinck said.

“With the help of simulation training of the staff, the examination and care methods of the RAPTOR suite will be refined to be as functional as possible so that the teams will be able to work optimally,” Brinck added. (HUS press release 5 November 2019)

The details of the equipment installation will be planned and verified with the help of the model facility equipment. It will reflect the final equipment that will be installed at Bridge Hospital.

The construction of Bridge Hospital will be completed during the summer of 2022 and the first patients will be admitted in early 2023.

Xephilio OCT-S1 Enables Capturing of 23 mm Wide-Field Image in a Single Shot

Zoetermeer, The Netherlands, 13 September 2019 – Expanding its advanced, high-performing Eye Care portfolio, Canon Medical Systems Europe introduces the industry’s first wide-field swept source OCT capable of capturing high-resolution images of up to 23 mm in a single scan – the Xephilio OCT-S1.

Canon’s deep scanning swept source technology allows better penetration of cataracts, hemorrhages, blood vessels and sclera and at the same time optimizes capture of retinal and choroidal data – all in a single shot. With a single capture, the swept source Xephilio OCT-S1 shows a large wide-field OCT scan area as wide as 23 x 20 mm, which can be very beneficial for retina thickness observation of retinal detachment or retinitis pigmentosa.

Xephilio OCT-S1 enables superior penetration of dense objects and provides outstanding tomographic images. In addition, Intelligent Denoise – the system’s Deep Learning AI technology – offers a new quality of OCTA images in a single scan with greatly reduced noise, increased detail and improved visibility within just seconds.

ASZ Aalst debuts Aquilion ONE GENESIS in Belgium

St. Stevens Woluwe, Belgium, May 2, 2019 – Canon Medical has installed the Aquilion ONE GENESIS, one of the first CT scanners with AI functionality in Europe, in Aalst’s General City Hospital, making it the first hospital in Belgium to boast AiCE technology.

Artificial intelligence

Canon Medical has named its AI application in the Aquilion ONE GENESIS ‘AiCE’, which stands for ‘Advanced Intelligent Clear-IQ Engine’. AiCE is the first Deep Learning Reconstruction method using AI to produce highly detailed images with extremely low noise. With its eight powerful graphics cards, the Aquilion’s AI application has a computing power approaching that of IBM’s Watson. Canon Medical spent approximately five years working on the development of the AI component and trained the algorithm with more than 100,000 scans.

Thanks to the application of AI, the scans made by the Aquilion ONE GENESIS are not only much clearer than those made by competing systems, but they also require the use of very little contrast agent and expose patients to far less radiation. While Canon Medical states that the system can realize radiation reductions of 20%, and even 40% for cardiac CTs, Dr. Van Hedent of the Aalst General City Hospital believes that the reductions are far more pronounced for his department. “Whereas previously we recorded an annual exposure of 10 millisievert for thoracic and abdominal scans, we now realize annual values lower than 5 mSv, because each scan only produces about 1 mSv of radiation. These extremely low doses will allow us to develop a screening program for lung tumors in the future, using the same dose of radiation as for a traditional lung X-ray.”

Next step: post-processing

Kristoff Reyntjens, Managing Director at Canon Medical Systems Belgium, indicates that the company is currently working on the final phase of applying AI in post-processing. Specifically, this will allow Vitrea, the visualization platform developed by Canon Medical, to automatically indicate that a certain pathology has been detected in a particular patient. Based on the collected data from all scans, the system will also be able to tell doctors which patients should be prioritized and which cases are not quite as urgent.

The Aquilion ONE GENESIS made its European debut in Nijmegen’s Radboudumc University Medical Center, where it was received with unanimous enthusiasm. It’s an opinion that users in Aalst seem to share: “The Aquilion ONE GENESIS is extremely energy-efficient, and though this may be a side issue for us and our patients, it is rather pleasing for environmental and financial reasons. The user-friendliness of the Aquilion ONE GENESIS is optimal, both for us and for our patients, its speed, low radiation and image quality are fantastic, and its future prospects are phenomenal”, Dr. Van Hedent of the ASZ concludes.

Canon Medical Streamlines Workflow and Enhances Patient Experience with MR Software Upgrades

New MR Software Features Showcased at ECR 2019

Vienna, Feb. 28, 2019 – Canon Medical Systems Europe B.V. introduces new software features to enable clinicians to further streamline workflow by consolidating the usual processes of MR exams, saving time while helping to provide a better patient experience.

• ^SUREVOI Knee and KneeLine+ allows clinicians to do quick automated localizing scans of the knees to allow for improved workflow. The automated software analysis automatically aligns anatomy for over 95 percent accuracy in determination and placement of standard knee view scans in just one step.
• WFS DIXON allows clinicians to take four contrasts in just one scan on FSE sequence, including in-phase, opposed , water and fat images. This simultaneous acquisition of standard and fat-suppressed images in a single scan can show uniform fat-suppression in difficult-to-shim areas. The new software is especially significant for workflow in spine and orthopedic MR exams.
• Quick Star has novel applications that allow for free breathing image acquisition in regions that traditionally require patients to hold their breath. Radial data acquisitions that help with the reduction of artifacts related to motion in the abdomen and any kind of internal motion also allow exams to be completed with fewer breath holds and greater patient comfort.

These new workflow enhancements are available on the Vantage Galan 3T systems, as well as on the newly launched Vantage Orian 1.5T. “The new MRI software enhancements help to expand the versatility of MR even further with faster and higher resolution images so that physicians don’t have to sacrifice image quality or patient comfort for speed,” said Dirk Berneking, Senior Manager of the MR Business Unit at Canon Medical Systems Europe B.V.. “With the help of this new advanced imaging technology, health care providers can produce accurate images, while continuing to provide a quick and comfortable exam experience for their patients.”

AiCE Delivers Advanced Image Quality with High Spatial Resolution

Vienna, Austria, 27 February 2019 – Building on its advanced imaging technologies Canon Medical Systems introduces AiCE, a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) image reconstruction technology for CT. AiCE, Advanced Intelligent Clear-IQ Engine, uses Deep Learning technology to differentiate signal from noise so that it removes noise while it preserves true signal.

With the AiCE Deep Learning approach, the DCNN is trained in the factory using perfect High-quality target data from real patient datasets. This patient data is extensively processed with advanced MBIR, Model Based Iterative Reconstruction, which provides optimal image quality and improved spatial resolution for groundbreaking results.

Following training and validation, the AiCE DCNN is then implemented into the CT scanner that allows for reconstruction speeds fast enough for busy clinical environments.

The Vantage Orian offers a range of innovative hardware features that can help improve workflow and deliver clinical confidence including:

The new flagship platform of systems incorporates all-new features that enable clinicians to deliver images with clarity and precision without compromising workflow – while prioritizing low dose.

With the launch of the Alphenix family, Canon Medical is also unveiling its exclusive new Hi-Def Detector (High-Definition Flat Panel Detector), which is available on the Alphenix Biplane and Alphenix Core+ systems. Made up of the world’s first high-definition detector – with 76 micron resolution – for resolving fine details, the unique hybrid 12×12 inch panel is combined with high-definition flat panel technology that results in resolutions of 2.6 lp/mm (Standard) and 6.6 lp/mm (Hi-Def Detector). Zoetermeer, the Netherlands/Manchester, United Kingdom, Manchester United Football Club has announced a renewed multi-year agreement with Canon Medical Systems Europe as its official medical systems partner.

The unique partnership will ensure that world-class players continue to gain instant access to advanced imaging equipment to examine injuries and undertake pre-emptive screening for preventable injuries, improving player welfare and maintaining career longevity at an elite level. The collaboration will also continue to push the boundaries of medical research and through translational methods, will benefit patient populations and healthcare professionals internationally.

The agreement between the two iconic organisations was first signed six years ago and top-of-the-range imaging modalities including CT, MRI and Ultrasound were installed into a dedicated Medical Centre at Manchester United’s Aon Training Complex. The renewed contract will continue the diagnostic imaging partnership benefitting players and staff at Manchester United Football Club, clinical communities operating in sports medicine and ultimately patients in the wider world.

Studies seeking the answers to prevent clinical conditions, improve diagnosis or enhance treatment in the areas of cardiology, musculoskeletal (MSK) and sports medicine are regularly undertaken at the Aon Training Complex. Research initiatives conducted throughout the partnership have been presented at high-level European Cardiology conferences, all of which have been very well received. This includes ‘Musculoskeletal MRI in Football Medicine’ and ‘Exercise Myocardial Performance in Adolescent Athletes’ research to extend knowledge and understanding in the fields of sports medicine.

Launch at The Hive London, home of Barnet Football Club, is a blueprint for national chain of elite diagnostic clinics closer to the community

A unique imaging centre in North London has today officially opened its doors to patients following accreditation from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. The Imaging Centre Limited (TIC) at Barnet Football Club’s Hive Stadium is the first in a series of planned diagnostic centres built to improve community access to CT, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray imaging examinations in a high-calibre environment. It will include the latest advanced imaging equipment from Canon Medical Systems.

Patients can be referred by their GP, NHS or Private Consultant and be scanned within days – much quicker than the non-urgent NHS referral-for-treatment 18-week wait commitment. This will greatly speed up diagnosis, improve clinical decision making and treatment planning, thus reducing the anxiety and frustration experienced by some patients who are concerned by symptoms or experiencing pain. The facility will open 12 hours a day, seven days a week, extending to 24 hours as demand requires. The non-clinical feel to the centre will help draw in nervous patients who may usually decline diagnostic appointments. It will also provide easy and plentiful on-site parking.

TIC will continue to provide imaging examinations to Barnet Football Club players, managing or preventing injuries and optimising training schedules based on individual anatomies. It also offers local cricket, rugby and athletic clubs a discreet imaging facility for sports medicine.

“Skill shortages in the NHS are acute and the demand for innovative imaging scans as a frontline diagnostic test is outstripping capacity at most NHS hospitals,” states Richard Bartlett, Chief Operating Officer at The Imaging Centre. “Our aim with TIC at Barnet Football Club is a blueprint for further community based imaging centres where patients can be seen quickly using the latest technology. Clinicians can swiftly gain access to detailed images and reports that they need to make an accurate and informed diagnosis. Greater imaging capacity across the UK will mean an improved flow of healthcare referrals that support the NHS and improve the overall wellbeing of local communities.”

TIC offers imaging equipment not currently found in other local North London hospitals or clinics. This includes the UK’s first Vantage Galan 3T MRI from Canon Medical Systems which puts patient comfort and highly detailed images for accurate diagnosis at the heart of its design. 3T MRI scanners are known to be extremely noisy but the Galan is the quietest MRI on the market, emitting a 63dB acoustic noise when scanning with its Pianissimo Zen sequences. This is only 2dB above ambient noise from every sequence scanned, significantly lower than the average MRI scanner noise level of 150dB. Patient anxiety is known to be reduced with a quieter scan. The Galan MRI also has a wide and short scanner bore hole for a more pleasant patient experience, which helps to reduce any patient movement, ensuring highly detailed images, which are better for clinical review,  interpretation and diagnosing with clinical confidence. An Aquilion One Genesis Edition CT scanner, Aplio i-series ultrasound scanner and Radrex Digital X-ray, all from Canon Medical Systems are also installed to provide a spectrum of diagnostic imaging tests for most clinical needs.

A fleet of 9 relocatable imaging systems are also part of the TIC business portfolio. Hospitals across the UK can hire the mobile trailers housing Canon Medical Systems’ MRI or CT scanners to scale up imaging to meet demand, or temporarily replace equipment in times of breakdown or maintenance.

On April 16 2018, Canon Medical Systems Europe B.V. has signed a reseller agreement with the Swedish medical device company Arcoma, allowing Canon Medical Systems to sell the high-end digital X-ray systems ‘Aceso’ and ‘Aceso+’ in Europe.

Arcoma and Canon Medical Systems already had a strong partnership in place, enabling Arcoma to deliver completely integrated systems to its clients using Canon’s imaging software and detectors. The reseller agreement marks a new step in the partnership. René Degros, European Sales Director at CMSE: “We were looking to strengthen our product portfolio in the diagnostic X-ray segment. The market is requesting robust and high-end auto-positioning systems. Vienna, Austria, 1 March 2018 – Canon Medical Systems Corporation has announced the release of its new premium 1.5T MRI system Vantage Orian. Vantage Orian will be introduced at the upcoming European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, Austria, held between February 28 and March 4. Vantage Orian is one of Canon Medical Systems’ first major product releases since officially changing their company name from Toshiba Medical on January 4, 2018, and represents a major foray into the premium wide bore 1.5T market along with new technology designed to boost productivity, enhance patient comfort and deliver diagnostic clinical confidence to users and patients alike.

In addition to the current 1.5T line-up of wide-bore Vantage Titan and standard bore Vantage Elan, Vantage Orian 1.5T represents Canon Medical’s premium offering in the 1.5T market segment.

With a new slim gradient that delivers a gradient performance with a maximum amplitude of 45 mT/m, combined with a slew rate of 200 T/m/s that enhances high resolution and diffusion imaging, Vantage Orian offers high performance imaging capability previously not available on 1.5T systems from Canon Medical Systems.

Utilizing migrated high end 3T technology, Vantage Orian offers referring physicians and patients diagnostic MRI imaging services with complete clinical confidence. Canon Medical System’s ^PURERF and Saturn Gradient technology means that stable and consistent imaging performance is ensured, increasing signal to noise ratio (SNR) by up to 38%*.

The Vantage Orian offers a range of new Rapid Scan and Easy Tech technology that reduces scan time and helps improve workflow. A redesigned gantry interface and dockable table ensure seamless patient handling. New applications like Multiband SPEEDER, that shortens acquisitions such as high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI), and up to x8 accelerated k-t SPEEDER allows high frame rate cardiac cine and perfusion imaging with free breathing.

Vantage Orian also offers one of the smallest footprints in the 1.5T wide-bore class and low power consumption eco features that reduce energy use by up to 21%*. The reliable system is equipped with excellent maintenance programs to satisfy the needs of hospital administrators.

A relaxed patient is key in MRI, and Vantage Orian takes care of this with industry leading quiet scan sequences that reduce ambient noise by Pianissimo Zen technology. The 71cm wide bore and immersive virtual MR Theater are designed to put patients at ease. Vantage Orian also addresses challenging patients with Pediatric SPEEDER coils, contrast free applications and ForeSee View for simplified scan planning.

Vienna, Austria, 28 February 2018 – Marking a major technological milestone in medical imaging, Canon Medical Systems Europe will present its Aquilion Precision^TM at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, Austria.

The Aquilion Precision is the world’s first Ultra-High Resolution CT (UHR CT) capable of resolving anatomy as small as 150 microns, providing CT image quality with resolution typically seen only in cath labs. The UHR detector is newly designed to provide more than twice the resolution when compared with today’s CT technology, representing the next breakthrough in CT imaging with an all-new detector as well as tube, gantry and reconstruction technologies.

The Aquilion Precision has the potential to help improve early detection of disease and tumor classification thanks to features that offer enhanced image detail, including:

• Groundbreaking dose efficiency: Detector channels that are only 0.25 mm thick are coupled with substantial improvements in scintillator quantum efficiency, detector circuitry and other DAS components. This results in a breakthrough dose-efficient detector with ultra-high resolution capabilities.
• Resolution never before seen in CT imaging: The system features the industry’s smallest Focal Spot Tube at 0.4 mm x 0.5 mm and the industry’s first 1024 and 2048 Reconstruction Matrix for further increased resolution.

“The Aquilion Precision is truly disruptive technology,” said Henk Zomer, European Business Unit Manager of Computed Tomography. With a resolution of 0.15 mm, anatomical detail is resolved more precisely, providing a magnitude of increased detail. With the resolving power of UHR CT, earlier detection of diseases is a new challenge. Vienna, Austria, 27 February 2018 – Healthcare centers around Europe are realizing a new realm of clinical efficiency with the Infinix-i 4D CT system, which seamlessly integrates Interventional Radiology (IR) and CT. Canon Medical Systems will showcase the cutting-edge imaging system at this year’s ECR annual meeting (Hall: X3, Booth: No 307).

The system’s unique merging of the Infinix-i angiography system with the customer’s choice of either the Aquilion^TM ONE ViSION Edition CT or the Aquilion PRIME CT, allows clinicians to efficiently plan, treat and verify in a single clinical setting. The following healthcare providers are already using the Infinix-i 4D CT system to help clinicians improve visualization and workflow:

Hôpital Saint Louis, Paris, France uses the Infinix-i 4D CT for a variety of IR and oncology procedures. “An amazing system combining CT with an interventional lab, opening new worlds for interventional oncology,” according to Prof. Eric de Kerviler.

University Hospital of Montpellier, France uses the system to perform all kinds of interventional liver related procedures. This unit is dedicated to liver oncology treatment, such as embolization in combination with chemotherapy or radioactive beads destroying tumors with ice or high temperature. “Having the best of all imaging modalities gathered in the same interventional suite is the dream of any IRs,” said Prof. Boris Guiu, leader of the team in Montpellier.

University Hospital Strasbourg, France uses the system for interventional radiology and oncology, as well as during liver ablations and orthopedic procedures. “High-quality true CT scanning during a complex intervention is key for us,” said Prof. Afshin Gangi.

Additional facilities will be installing the Infinix-i 4D CT system this year. The system’s integration of IR and CT technology into one solution can help clinicians improve visualization and productivity, while prioritizing patient safety.

“Interventional procedures are becoming more and more complex, which could result potentially in an increase in fluoroscopic time. This means that the interventional landscape is looking for new technologies and innovations to help physicians reduce radiation, increase image quality and improve their workflow. The Green Apple awards, a Green Organisation initiative, are part of an annual international campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. Canon Medical Systems Corporation was proclaimed Gold Winner in the category Innovation, for its Aquilion ONE Genesis CT scanner. The exclusive awards ceremony was held in the Palace of Westminster, London. Awards were presented in various categories, such as Carbon, Energy Efficiency, Manufacturing and Waste management.

Left or right side of the patient, from head to toe, C-arm over or under the patient couch: The ceiling-mounted C-arm moves around the patient giving the interventional team fast patient access while catheters stay in place. Moreover, the INFINIX-i Rite Edition is easily out of the way during a procedure. The physician can simply move the C-arm aside, thanks to its unique lateral arm movement. “Room to move translates into optimized visualization and positioning in the examination room”, Degros says about this new “3D anywhere” system as it is already being called among physicians.

The INFINIX-i Rite Edition’s C-arm flips and rotates in any direction and the flat panel detector can be placed beneath the patient table. Detector and beam collimator are automatically synchronized. VIENNA – Canon Medical Systems Europe will be showing off OrthoMod 3D, a new 3D spinal imaging technology, at the ECR 2016 (European Congress for Radiology), March 2-6, in Vienna.

OrthoMod 3D combines optic information about back morphology with a classic radiographic image of the spine (stitching) to yield a 3D model of the vertebral column. The 3D model gives a complete view of the spine so practitioners can thoroughly evaluate spine deformities in pathologies including scoliosis, kyphosis, vertebral compression, posture and balance anomalies, and dorsopathy. The 3D model provides valuable information about the rotations and twists in the spine that are not possible to evaluate in traditional 2D.

Before OrthoMod 3D, getting 3D information usually meant a visit to a scanner or MRI for other exams. This new technology allows access to 3D information with no additional dose, compared to a 2D exam.

“The new spinal imaging solution is extremely accessible,” says René Degros, Business Unit Manager for X-Ray with Canon Medical Systems Europe, “and it can be easily integrated into an existing R/F or RAD suite equipped with digital full spine. VIENNA – The INFINIX ^4DCT from Canon Medical Systems Europe is making high-risk clinical cases easier, safer and faster. Interventional radiologists and other clinicians can get a close-up view of this state of the art angio-CT concept at ECR 2016 (European Congress for Radiology), March 2-6, in Vienna.

Cone-beam CT is a great tool but has several limitations particularly with regard to field of view, breathing instructions, resolution, and radiation dose.

In the past, when a patient underwent a high-risk intervention using conventional cone-beam CT but image quality was considered to be insufficient, he had to be transferred to a full-fledged CT scanner in another room – an interruption which could take up to an hour and left the patient vulnerable during the wait.

With Canon’s INFINIX ^4DCT a full CT scan can be done immediately using a powerful hybrid imaging system that combines the world’s most flexible angio suite with the most advanced dynamic volume CT. It gives the medical team new capabilities for planning the intervention, treatment and follow-up.

INFINIX ^4DCT can be configured with an angiography system and one of four Aquilion CTs: the 32-slice Aquilion Large Bore, the 160-slice Aquilion PRIME, the 640-slice Aquilion ONE and the 640-slice Aquilion ONE Vision Edition. Unique to the INFINIX ^4DCT configuration with the 640-slice Aquilion ONE is the 16 cm full anatomical coverage that adds a fourth dimension to the 3D full volume scans by showing time lapse images in a cine model.

Canon’s signature wide detector CT technology with up to 16 cm coverage in a single rotation provides outstanding ability in a wide range of procedures including cardiac, neuro, interventional oncology and trauma.

It also brings a new dimension to procedures, such as gastric-intestinal (GI) bleeding, bronchial artery embolization, complex endoleak embolization or drainage. While, for example, locating a GI bleed can be very difficult in angio view or cone-beam CT due to motion artefacts caused by breathing, a CT scanner in the room instantaneously provides high-quality images.

The INFINIX ^4DCT suite integrates Canon’s ^SUREGuidance for rapid, accurate target positioning be it to view a reference slice for pathology or to precisely target a position loaded from the angio image.

“Such a system with a CT scanner takes us one step further by acquiring anatomical and functional data simultaneously with high spatial and temporal resolution,” says René Degros, Business Unit Manager X-Ray Europe. “No other modality has this field of view and this level of detail.”

While clinicians may think they are covering an entire tumor with angio, INFINIX ^4DCT shows signs of other arteries that might be feeding the tumor, Dugros points out. “It becomes easier to locate these extrahepatic feeders and ensure we treat the entire tumor.”

INFINIX ^4DCT also incorporates DoseRite and AIDR3D functions that optimize image quality at low-dose exposures with iterative reconstruction and Canon’s Adaptive Diagnostics functionalities for bone-free contrast-enhanced imaging.

“Each intervention holds a risk,” says Degros. “Yet if we bring a CT scanner into the room, we have the option to do studies that can give us clear endpoints, to determine whether we have treated the patient’s condition sufficiently and not expose the patient to further risk caused by additional interventions.”

VIENNA – Imagine telling your anxious patients that they can have virtual reality experiences while getting an MRI. It’s not a far-off fantasy. It is reality with technology developed by Canon Corp. and Canon Medical Systems and it will be on display during the ECR (European Congress for Radiology), March 2-6, in Vienna.

Canon has been focused on easing MRI stress for quite some time and previously released a 72-cm large-aperture open-bore MRI system with Pianissimo quiet scan technology. This newly developed projection technology expands on that concept and further improves patient comfort while reducing stress during the MRI exam by projecting high-reality images onto a dome-shaped screen.

The semi-transparent dome screen moves in synchronization with the patient table installed inside the bore. Images are projected onto the dome screen and bore cover from a projector installed behind the MRI system from a location that is unaffected by the magnetic field. The images are reflected by a mirror on the patient table, providing a view that helps take the patient’s attention away from the actual examination space.

Canon Corp. developed the core technologies used in the in-vehicle head-up display and ultra-high presence head-mounted display systems. In addition to the center field, where the colors and shapes of objects are processed, image stimulus is applied to the peripheral field, where special depth and width and object movements are processed, achieving high-reality images with a view angle as wide as 60 degrees or more. The images appear as if they were much further away than the bore core, providing an expansive and bright virtual space for the patient. “A virtual reality that substantially improves patient comfort during the procedure”, says Dirk Berneking, Business Unit Manager MRI with Canon Medical Systems Europe. The images can be viewed continuously without changing the image size even as the table moves during the MRI exam.

Combined with noise reduction, this new technology will help make a patient more comfortable and less anxious while in the MRI bore. Canon is striving for early commercial release of this newest MRI feature.

In order to fully satisfy the clinical demands, Vantage Titan 3T / iS Edition incorporates the new gradient coil system employed in Saturn Gradient, which enables higher image quality with open-bore MRI systems. Development background

By incorporating innovative RF transmission technique Multi-phase Transmission, Vantage Titan 3T have brought abdomen imaging into the clinical settings, which had been difficult with conventional 3T MRI systems. In order to expand the possibility of 3T MRI systems, the system’s clinical functions are significantly enhanced to provide Intelligent Solutions, which comes from the key system concepts of “Superior and Sophisticated”, “Streamlined”, and “Secure and Serene”. In addition, to meet the market demand for a compact system, the required installation space has been minimized to 36 m².

Features of the new product

1. “Superior and Sophisticated”

Incorporating both a large-aperture open bore and higher gradient field output increases heat generation and vibration of the gradient coil during image acquisition, adversely affecting image quality. The new gradient coil system employed in Saturn Gradient system, released in November 2014, features high cooling capability and vibration suppression. Shift of the center frequency due to heat generation and signal dispersion due to vibration are suppressed, which results in high SNR. As a result, high-quality images can be acquired consistently. From Vantage Titan 3T / iS Edition, all Canon 3T MRI models employ the new gradient coil system.

In order to satisfy a wider variety of clinical needs, many new applications are installed in the latest software. More flexible parameter edit supported by a new sequence development environment allows full use of the system capabilities, making it possible to scan with UTE (Ultrashort TE). This technique visualizes tissues with an extremely short T2* value, enabling visualization of regions which had been difficult to depict with conventional MRI systems. It expands the capability of MRI examinations to new regions such as the lung fields.

 
2. “Streamlined”

Nowadays, there are growing demands for MRI to increase the number of daily examinations to maximize the system productivity. Canon MRI systems provide the answers to support efficient examinations for a wide variety of body regions. EasyTech, a function to automatically set scan slices by analyzing the shape of the target anatomy, has been enhanced to offer both higher examination throughput and reproducibility. The new EasyTech incorporates the advanced scanning plane positioning function: NeuroLine+ to support head scan, CardioLine+ for cardiac scan, and SpineLine for spinal scan. With CardioLine+, in addition to automatically set six basic cardiac planes, further eight-planes setting become available: right ventricle, valve and outflow tract. The newly installed ^SUREVOI^TM Cardiac automatically detects appropriate settings for cardiac examinations by recognizing the position of the heart, providing easier and more efficient workflow with higher reproducibility.

3. “Secure and Serene”

The security of medical equipment is now an extremely important issue. Conventional security software programs require regular updating of data in order to provide protection against unknown viruses. Vantage Titan 3T / iS Edition employs Windows® 7 and whitelist-based security software that permits only software programs registered in the whitelist to be executed. Thus the system is protected from unknown viruses and other malicious software, system downtime is reduced, contribution to the spread of infections via networks is averted, and leakage of patient information is prevented^*1. Together with Vantage Titan, which is the world’s first 1.5T MRI system to comply with the network security guidelines by the United States Department of Defense, Vantage Titan 3T / iS Edition has received Approval To Operate (ATO) from the United States Air Force^*2. Moreover, alert functions for system abnormalities have been strengthened, and a quick reset function for the hardware has been added. These functions, together with the conventional remote maintenance function and various other features, help minimize the system down time.

Environmental considerations

For Vantage Titan 3T / iS Edition, new advanced RF coils become available, which further enhance the system performance. The new Atlas SPEEDER™ Head/Neck incorporates a tilt mechanism that helps imaging of elderly patients and patients with spinal cord injuries, in the past making MRI examination difficult to perform. This feature allows such patients to be positioned in a shorter time and permits them to be examined in a more comfortable position. In addition, 16ch Tx/Rx Knee SPEEDER is also available. This transmit and receive coil provides better image quality for knee, allowing to acquire high-resolution images, which is clinically required for knee examinations. Easy-to-operate locking mechanism is applied to this coil, allowing fine patient positioning and enhance daily throughput.

*1：In the blacklist method generally used at homes and offices, data is required for detecting and eliminating viruses. This data needs to be updated regularly, and periodic scanning of the system is required. These processes apply additional load to the system, affecting system performance. In addition, if updating of the data is neglected, this method does not provide protection for the latest vulnerability issues. On the other hand, in the whitelist method that we have employed, only the programs required for MRI operations (which are registered in the security software) can be executed. Thus updating of virus-related data is not required, and stable operation of the MRI system can be ensured.

*2：It is necessary to set “Advanced Security Setting” to ON.

Festival Medical Services ready to man one of the busiest medical facilities in the country – Over 200,000 festival goers and site workers will result in approximately 4,000 patients during the festival in 2015

Over 500 medical staff prepare to provide care over the period.

Glastonbury, UK. June 17th 2015 – From 24^th – 29^th June 2015 around 200,000 festival goers and site workers will converge at Glastonbury for the most anticipated music festival of the year.

Each year, a huge number of visitors and support staff continue to push the limits for Festival Medical Services, the charity responsible for providing medical care at Glastonbury. The medical team will serve one of the countries busiest medical facilities during the festival, treating over 4,000 festival goers in 2014, at an average of around 600 patients every day. This year, three local hospitals in Bath, Yeovil and Taunton will take referrals for major injuries.

The field hospital set up includes: two major medical centres for drop-in and ambulance patients, equipped and staffed for minor and major injuries; a 24-hour pharmacy; an emergency dentistry service; a mental health unit, led by consultant psychiatrists; a team of paramedics and first responders who cover the festival site both in 4×4 vehicles and on foot. For major injuries, there is a two-bed resuscitation area directly connected to an ambulance bay as well as a helicopter ambulance facility to provide fast and effective journeys for those needing urgent treatment.

Dr. Mark Regi, consultant vascular interventional radiologist at the Sheffield Vascular Institute heads up the medical imaging team at Glastonbury: “The provision of care at the festival grows more comprehensive each year. It’s important that fast assessment of injury is made to ensure the quickest possible path to treatment is provided. The imaging services save a significant number of transfers to local A&E departments due to the capability on-site. It’s a huge operation for the duration of the festival”.

The shifts at the main medical centres are headed by an A&E doctor, who will work with a team of other specialty doctors working in shifts through the festival. The team is backed up by a team of nurses, physiotherapists and podiatrists. In addition to this, every day, a consultant paediatrician, a surgeon, gynaecology consultant, a consultant radiologist and anaesthetist are available for referrals from the A&E unit as patients are triaged through assessment to treatment quickly and effectively.

Working in partnership with the Festival Medical Services team, the Canon medical ultrasound imaging equipment forms an important part of the services care provision. A 24-hour ultrasound service is manned by a team of six consultant radiologists, all from major teaching units covering a range of sub-specialties. All are on-call over the six-day period and are backed up by a team of radiographers, providing constant and consistent availability for festival goers.

The imaging team usually performs over 20 ultrasounds per festival, using Canon Viamo™ portable ultrasound scanners, which are provided for the festival duration free of charge together with a team to help operate the equipment. Rob Hawkes, Consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital helps lead the radiology team during the festival. He comments: “The imaging team provides an important role during the festival. In 2013, we had an unfortunate incident where a festival goer suffered a penetrating chest trauma injury. Having easy and immediate access to the imaging equipment helped save a life with an echo cardiograph showing serious bleeding around the patient’s heart. The story ended well with the patient recovering after emergency stabilising interventions on site and rapid transfer to the regional cardiothoriacic centre. It’s an effective demonstration of the speed with which we can assess and refer quickly for treatment. From a scan taking place to the patient arriving at Bristol Heart Hospital happened within 35 minutes using land, then air ambulance.”

“As well as the patient benefits, there are strong economic reason for an onsite radiology unit. It costs on average £250 for each hospital transfer, not to mention the extra loading on local A&E departments and their radiology departments if we were to refer all patients. The imaging equipment allows us to provide a better service for festival goers through quick and effective on-site assessment and immediate treatment options for minor injuries.”

As well as the extremely rare medical emergencies, the last few festivals have seen emerging trends with regard to the importance of imaging with a growing number of festival goers in early pregnancy who have needed reassurance that their pregnancy remained healthy. Over the past three years the majority of the ultrasound has been of pregnant visitors and that number is growing every year. The women’s health service also includes a gynaecological consultant who works closely with a sonographer. Non urgent scans take place every morning during the festival.

Dr. Hawkes adds: “In terms of the most frequent injuries that require scans on site, the rain and mud have caused a growing number of lower leg fracture injuries over the last couple of festivals. In very muddy conditions, boots become stuck in the mud and festivals goers fall awkwardly causing severe strains or leg breaks at worst”.

Breakthrough innovations in the manufacturing process of CT detectors have resulted in the ^PUREViSION detector, a detector with 40% more light output than other detectors redefining the standard for low dose imaging. As patient safety should not depend on the hospital size or available scanners Canon has implemented the ^PUREViSION detector in the complete AquilionTM series, from the Premium Tier Aquilion ONETM /ViSION Edition down to the Low Tier Aquilion /Lightning.

Each ^PUREViSION detector is cut with precision micro-blade technology from a solid ingot to guarantee the maximum surface area for X-ray absorption. The detector elements are separated with an accuracy of just a few microns and optically isolated by highly reflective material to ensure excellent light transmission through the scintillator. Furthermore the integrated DAS board has been optimized resulting in by up to 28% reduction in electronic noise producing a purer image. Using low kVp permits a reduction in the volume of contrast medium needed to achieve images of diagnostic quality. ^PUREViSION enables physicians to not only lower the radiation dose but also to lower kVp and a considerable reduction in usage of contrast media. While a reduction in radiation and contrast media results in safer patient imaging, the use of less contrast media itself can contribute to a cost reduction for the hospital.

This represents a major step forward in diagnosing coronary artery disease in patients with severe calcium or stents for whom Cardiac CT Angiography was not recommended.

Canon is proud to introduce “^SURESubtraction™ Coronary”. This software was developed in close cooperation with the Iwate Medical University in Japan, leading hospitals in the USA and Europe and the European based research center, Canon Medical Visualization Systems.

Severe coronary calcification influences the effectiveness of Coronary CT Angiography in ruling out coronary artery disease. Frequently these patients are referred for invasive angiography because of clinical suspicion of significant coronary artery disease. Stents placed in the coronary arteries can make visualization of the lumen within the stent difficult, hindering the ability to diagnose in-stent restenosis.

“^SURESubtraction Coronary” removes calcification and stents from the coronary arteries, therefore improving visualization of the coronary lumen. Blooming effects caused by calcification are dramatically reduced.

An added benefit of “^SURESubtraction Coronary” is that it can be obtained with a near dose neutral scanning protocol. Coronary Subtraction is performed by subtracting a routine Calcium Score dataset from a Coronary CT Angiography dataset. The Calcium Score scan being used as the non-contrast mask for subtraction.

Atlas based cardiac segmentation and sophisticated rigid and deformable registration algorithms enable accurate subtraction of the coronary arteries to become a reality, leading to improved visualization of the coronary lumen.

The unique capabilities of the wide area detector Aquilion ONE^TM series are a perfect platform for this ground-breaking new development.

Canon Medical Systems today unveiled the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Imaging Centre. New world class CT, MRI, X-ray and Ultrasound imaging technology powers the medical imaging centre at the Games for 6,500 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories across the World.

Manchester, United Kingdom, March 11th 2014 – Manchester United and Canon Medical Systems today unveiled a brand new medical facility at the AON Training Complex. The partnership sees the club and Canon Medical Systems coming together in a mutually beneficial project involving the use of state-of-the-art medical technology within an elite sports club environment. The collaboration will promote the rapid development of novel sports medicine and exercise-related applications for CT, ultrasound and MRI scanner technology developed by global leaders in the fields of football and medical technology.
The technology will enable Manchester United’s medical team in partnership with Canon Medical Systems team to push the boundaries of sports medicine with regards to optimisation of diagnosis, rehabilitation and preventative care. An Aquilion ONE™ CT scanner – The World’s first dynamic volume CT system will allow the facility medical team to quickly identify and diagnose potentially serious vascular and neurological anomalies. It is the only scanner that is able to acquire volumes of entire organs with a single rotation of the scanner gantry, by using a 320-row detector.

Volumetric acquisition protocols can also be used to review moving joint structures in 3D, providing new clinical applications for orthopaedic imaging.

For cardiac examinations, the entire heart can be captured in as little as one rotation for coronary analysis, or over a single heartbeat to include complete functional diagnosis. Cardiac arrhythmias or heart rates up to 130 bpm are no longer an issue as opposed to helical and multislice CT, meaning that image reconstruction can proceed as planned, allowing greater accuracy of data capture for scans of players who may require enhanced cardiac screening assessments following exercise stress.

Reducing radiation dose is a significant priority for imaging professionals. Canon’s exposure control technology ^SUREExposure™ 3D calculates the absolute minimum radiation exposure for each patient based on their size and shape. Combined with Canon’s Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction 3D (AIDR 3D) the calculated exposure is automatically reduced by up to 75% compared to a scan performed with traditional filtered back projection. Perfect transducers for perfect diagnostics
Xario comes with a range of a new type of wide bandwidth transducers from standard models to specialty probes to deliver superb image quality. “The transducers are very lightweight and feel very easy to handle, with very flexible cables”, Dr. Kinkel confirms, “transducers have a major impact on the image quality that I can obtain and on the way I perform my exams. Xario 200 even offers a touch-command-screen to program the system settings and access a wide range of applications and exam types pre-programmed into the system very intuitively and quickly. With Canon’s QuickScan technology available on Xario200 and Xario100 the user can optimize the imaging parameters with a single push of a button for all transducers and application protocols at any time during the exam.

Versatility in every aspect
The Xario can be equipped with dedicated features and options to tailor the system to various clinical specialties. Dr. Rainer Bald, head of the obstetrics department of the Klinikum in Leverkusen, Germany, has worked with the OB/GYN options on the Xario. “The image quality for fetal diagnostics is amazing and comes very close to the Aplio. Advanced Dynamic Flow on the Xario is a very strong feature to enhance Color Doppler Imaging, it helps me a lot in the diagnostics of the fetal heart”, Dr. Bald says.

For cardiovascular applications the Xario comes with a smart on-board reporting functionality, flexible M-Mode, an optional stress-echo program, and Tissue Enhancement function.
